Mayor’s Fitness Council 5K Run/Walk

Thank you to everyone who participated, sponsored and volunteered to work at the 2013 Mayor’s Fitness Council 5K Fun Run/Walk!  We could not have been successful without you.  Check out the results of the race here.

The winners of the Mayor Nelda Look a Like Contest were the participants from the State Assisted Living Center who dressed like Mayor Nelda and wore her signature red rose broche.

The Running Club from Meadowbrook Elementary School won the Spirit Stick Challenge and will be receiving a free lunch sometime this school year!  Plus they will be offered free registration for next year’s event.

Stay tuned for information about the 2014 MFC 5K Fun Run/Walk!  We hope to build on this year’s success and encourage everyone in Coprus Christi to Get Up, Get Out and Get Fit!

2013 Event Information

The Mayor’s Fitness Council 5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Cole Park at 8:30 am to:

  • Encourage Corpus Christians to get up, get out and get fit!
  • Raise funds to support MFC Wellness Initiatives including increasing the number of hike and bike trails, tobacco-free youth sports parks, community gardens and other wellness programs.

This is going to be an event for people of all fitness levels to enjoy!  There will be an elementary school runners team challenge, a lounge at the 2-mile mark for those people still on the quest towards physical fitness and other activities and challenges to make the day fun!

Register for the event TODAY!!

Mayor Nelda Martinez is getting into the get fit and healthy swing too!  She’s been training each week and eating healthy so she can meet the goal she’s set for herself to finish the race.  Mayor Martinez will be posting words of encouragement and updates about her own training progress on the MFC Facebook.  So be sure to check in with us every once in awhile!

If you’re interested in partnering with the Mayor’s Fitness Council to put on this fit-tastic event there are several sponsorship packages available.  Email Stacie Talbert at for more information about sponsorship opportunities.  Can’t sponsor the event this year?  No worries – You can help us by posting our event flyer on your bulletin board at the store, break room or meeting rooms to help spread the word!

Mayor Martinez Look-a-Like Contest

What’s the use of running/walking a 5K if you can’t have a little fun while you do it?  So, to make things a little more interesting we are hosting a Mayor Martinez Look-a-Like Contest.  That iconic hair, that iconic smile and those iconic pants suits give us all a great muse for the contest!  There will be two prizes: Best Overall Imposter and First Imposter Across the Line

Spirit Stick Competition

The Elementary School Running Club with the most registered participants will win the First Spirit Stick Award.  In addition to a spirit stick they can showcase in the front office of their school, the winning club will get a free healthy lunch delivered to their school AND free registration to next year’s event!  So make sure you ask your principal and running club coach to register your student.

2-mile Lounge

Realizing that not everyone has had an opportunity to train properly for the event, the Mayor’s Fitness Council will offer a lounge at the 2-mile marker for runners/walkers who might need to catch their breath and get a drink of water.  Stop and take a break on our couches OR just grab a drink of water and keep on moving.

Free Smoothies for Everyone!

We all need a little carrot to keep us moving down the line…and we can always count on our friends at Smoothie King to help us!  They will be making healthy smoothies for everyone who finishes the race!  That’s all the reason we need to lace up our sneakers and get moving.

Training for the Fun Run

So you’ve decide to join us at Cole Park on September 28 but you don’t how to start training for the run.  Well, our Chairman Wade Spenst has put together a Couch to 5K Training program for those just starting out to follow.  If you begin the program the week of July 27 you’ll be ready for the event!

Training is always easier when you’re with friends so the MFC is doing Monday training runs/walks to get you jump started on Wade’s training regimen.  Feel free to join us at Cole Park each Monday morning at 7:00 and evening at 6:00 as we train for the event ourselves!  One or more of the MFC will be at the lower North parking lot in Cole Park during these times.  If you need a training buddy – we will be there for you!

Not big on training with a group?  No worries – here’s a copy of the course map so you can start training on your own.

Stay tuned for more details about training for the event, registration and event day activities.

Thank You Sponsors!

Of course an event of this size wouldn’t happen without the support of local businesses and organizations.  We’d like to thank our sponsors for their commitment to making our community healthier and encouraging everyone to get fit!
